Lead Principal Engineer – HVDC Plant
Company: SSEN Transmission (SSE) Location: Scotland (Perth, Glasgow, Aberdeen, or Inverness – 50% office-based) Salary: £78,400 – £117,600 + Car/Car Allowance + Performance Bonus Pattern: Permanent | Full-Time (Part-Time & Flexible options available)
The Role
Take on a pivotal leadership role shaping the future of HVDC Plant engineering. As SSEN Transmission delivers a £30bn investment programme to accelerate the UK toward Net Zero, you will join our Offshore Project Engineering team as a technically authoritative leader.
You will oversee the design development and implementation of HVDC systems across a multi-project offshore portfolio. This role is about more than just technical oversight; it’s about mentoring specialist engineers, driving innovation, and ensuring engineering consistency across some of the UK’s most ambitious energy projects.
Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership: Provide accountability for all HVDC Plant engineering initiatives, ensuring solutions align with business, regulatory, and safety standards.

Team Mentorship: Guide and nurture a team of specialist engineers, fostering an inclusive culture and supporting their career growth.

Technical Escalation: Act as the critical point of contact for complex design issues, ensuring compliance with CDM, ESQCR, and SSEN standards.

Innovation & Strategy: Drive continuous improvement by engaging with technology providers and industry forums to shape best practices and future project pipelines.

Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with supply chain partners and internal teams to develop fit-for-purpose standards and optimize engineering solutions.
Requirements
We are looking for a credible leader with a passion for developing others and a deep understanding of HVDC technology.

Experience: A proven track record in delivering complex HVDC Converter engineering projects and leading technical teams.

Education: A degree in a relevant Engineering discipline. Chartered Engineer status (or equivalent) is preferred.

Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of HVDC Plant engineering and relevant legislation (CDM & ESQCR).

Soft Skills: Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts for various audiences.
