Lead Principal Engineer – Civil and Geotechnical

Company: SSEN Transmission (SSE) Location: Scotland (Perth, Glasgow, Aberdeen, or Inverness) – 50% office-based Salary: £78,400 – £117,600 + car/allowance + performance bonus Pattern: Permanent | Full-Time (Part-Time & Flexible options available)


The Role

Take on a pivotal leadership role shaping the future of Civil and Geotechnical engineering for some of the UK’s most ambitious offshore transmission projects. As we execute a £30bn investment programme toward Net Zero, you will join our Offshore Project Engineering team as a technically authoritative and collaborative leader.

You will oversee design development and geotechnical investigations across a multi-project offshore portfolio, ensuring engineering consistency, safety, and innovation while mentoring a team of specialist engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership: Provide high-level accountability for all Civil and Geotechnical initiatives, ensuring alignment with regulatory and safety standards.

  • Team Mentorship: Guide and nurture a team of specialist engineers, fostering an inclusive culture and supporting professional growth.

  • Problem Resolution: Act as the critical escalation point for complex design issues, applying collaborative problem-solving across the offshore portfolio.

  • Safety & Compliance: Champion HSE excellence, ensuring strict adherence to CDM, ESQCR, and SSEN standards.

  • Driving Innovation: Stay ahead of industry trends by engaging with technology providers and forums to implement new solutions and best practices for future pipelines.

Requirements

  • Experience: A proven track record of delivering complex onshore and offshore engineering projects and leading high-performing teams.

  • Education: A degree in a relevant engineering discipline; Chartered Engineer status (or equivalent) is highly preferred.

  • Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of Civil Engineering, Geotechnical assessments, and relevant legislation (CDM & ESQCR).

  • Communication: Exceptional stakeholder management skills with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts for diverse audiences.
